Brick matching
Bring us a brick. We'll find its twin.
Extensions and repairs live or die on the match. Fifty years of looking at bricks, and four million of them on the yard, means we can usually get closer than anyone else.
Why matching is harder than it looks
A brick that looked right in a photo can look completely wrong once it's laid up next to eighty years of weathering. Colour shifts, the texture changes with the clay, and older bricks are often a different size altogether — imperial bricks won't course with a modern 65mm.
That's before you get to blends. Most old walls aren't one brick; they're a mixture that came out of the kiln with natural variation. Matching them with a single uniform modern brick is what makes an extension shout “extension” from the other side of the road.
We'd rather tell you honestly that a brick is close-but-not-right than sell you 4,000 of something you'll regret every time you pull onto the drive.
“If you can't find it at Steward's, you won't find it anywhere.”
What our customers tell us

How it works
Four steps to the right brick
- 01
Send us a photo, or bring the brick in
A clear photo in daylight tells us most of what we need — colour, texture, size and how it's weathered. Better still, drop a sample into the yard at Paddock Wood and we'll hold it against the real thing.
- 02
We pull the closest bricks we hold
With over 4 million bricks on site, there's usually something very close already here. We'll lay the candidates out so you can see them side by side rather than guessing from a screen.
- 03
If nothing's right, we blend
Old bricks vary — that's the whole problem. Where no single brick works we'll blend two, three or four different bricks until the mix reads correctly in the wall.
- 04
You approve it, we deliver it
Once you're happy with the match we'll confirm quantity and price, and get it out on our own lorries — often the next day.

Tell us what you're matching
Describe the brick — colour, texture, roughly how old the wall is — and we'll take it from there. You're also very welcome to bring a sample into the yard.
